Aibileen is still smiling, completely undeterred by anything I’ve said. And honestly, I’m grateful for this. I knew she’d be excited, but I was afraid she’d be a little disappointed, too. Seeing her makes me realize, I’m not disappointed at all. I’m just happy.

We sit and talk another few minutes, drinking coffee and tea, until I look at my watch. “I told Daddy I’d be home in an hour.” Daddy is at home with Mother. I took a risk and left him Aibileen’s number just in case, telling him I was going to visit a friend named Sarah.

They both walk me to the door, which is new for Minny. I tell Aibileen I’ll call her as soon as I get Missus Stein’s notes in the mail.

Lauryn Williams and Lolo Jones have been selected for the U.S. bobsled team that will compete in next month's Sochi Olympics.


They are now positioned to join a group of eight other Americans who have competed in both the Summer and Winter Games. Williams is a three-time summer Olympian who helped the U.S. win a gold medal in the 400-meter relay at the London Games. Jones is a two-time veteran of the summer games in the 100-meter hurdles, missing out on gold in Beijing after a late stumble.

Jones is in her second season of bobsledding, then recruited Williams to the sport last year. They will join Aja Evans, another Winter Olympic first-timer, as the push athletes in Sochi, along with drivers Jamie Greubel, Elana Meyers and Jazmine...

A new blast of cold air that hit the Northeast and the Midwest on Sunday won't be as biting as the cold that kicked off January, but it was bad enough to cause the derailment of a coal train in Wisconsin.
As millions of Americans were bracing for another chill after a relatively warm — albeit short — hiatus, Wisconsin officials were investigating cracks in the track near Caledonia, in the southwest part of the state, where 19 cars of a 135-car Union Pacific train heading to Wyoming ran off the rails.
Nobody was injured in the accident, which happened about 7:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. ET), state Railroad Commissioner Jeff Plale told NBC station WTMJ of Milwaukee. But 5-Mile Road will be closed...
